News media is reporting that Bounty Killer and Mavado are not only banned from performing in Guyana, but also their music is also banned on the airwaves in Guyana. The reggae dancehall artistes were banned from performing in Guyana last week by the government.
It is being reported by islandevents.com that "all private programme producers who host programmes on the state radio, were asked to desist from playing the music of the two artistes because of the content of their lyrics." The steps by the government came to the fore after Bounty Killer's recent performance in Guyana.
According to the report, a deal was struck between the promoters and government that Bounty Killer would not perform tracks that incite violence. This deal was broken when Bounty Killer did appear on stage at the event.
Mavado on the other hand was set to perform in Guyana at Linden Town last Sunday but was banned due to being labeled by the government as a "security risk". THE STAR in an interview with Julian Jones-Griffith stated, "I haven't spoken to any of them in depth about it (the Guyana ban) but we just have to stay strong, positive and focused, and keep making music for the people."
Prior to this latest ban, the two deejays were banned from entering Guyana. The country's Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, speaking at a news conference said the decision to blacklist the two Jamaicans was made by the Bharrat Jagdeo administration after careful consideration of their track record.
Recently in Trinidad and Tobago, radio personality Kwesi "Hypa Hoppa" Hopkinson also pleaded with radio personalities to limit playing tracks by Movado that instigate violent behaviour especially in the youths.
